Russian Cybersquatters Squashed by Google
Russian Internet culture developed later than the Western
Internet culture. Russian law also took longer to surface
online — as many international companies who came to Russia
to do business had a chance to find out the hard way. All
the way back at the dawn of the Internet Age in Russia,
some people were already thinking of profiting from Western
expansion. Coca-Cola, Nokia, Kodak, Audi, and most
recently, Google, have all had to battle cybersquatters who
had registered Western trademarks as domain names.

Unlikely Alliance Seeks .xxx Top-Level Domain
The extreme diversity of the individuals who have banded
together to seek a sponsored top-level Internet domain
(sTLD)--.xxx--for adult entertainment may be the strongest

de: Former Prime Minister Opposes Internet Domain
The German Federal High Court recently dismissed a claim
brought by Kurt Biedenkopf, the former prime minister of
the German state of Saxony, to protest the use of his name
as a web address (for reasons not yet published). The
politician demanded that DeNIC, the competent authority for
registering domain names with the ending ".de," completely
close the web address "www.kurt-biedenkopf.de." Biedenkopf
had not intended to register this address for his own
purposes.

fr: The Relaxing of .fr Naming Policy
In a press release dated 7th January 2004, the French
Association for Internet Naming in Cooperation ("AFNIC," or
the "Association Française pour le nommage Internet en
Coopération") announced a relaxing of the ".fr" naming
policy. In particular, AFNIC aims to suppress the so-called
"right to name" ("droit au nom"), i.e., the rule under
which only entities having a legal existence or a
registered trademark on the French territory may register a
".fr" domain name.

Ireland's .ie To Come Under Government Control
The Irish domain registry (IEDR) is to come under the
control of the Commission for Communications Regulation
ComReg. At present the registry is managed by a
"not-for-profit" company, however it has come under
increasing criticism with regard to both its management and
policies. Although there are approximately 40,000 IE
domains currently registered, it is still one of the
strictest and most expensive ccTLDs in the world.
