I assume you mean Internet Registrations Australia. If the IRA are using
telemarketers now then we are all in deep trouble :)

I got the letter as well and called them up to have bit of a chat. Turns out
that the person who runs IRA hired some telemarketers to answer the phone.

Nigel

Yeah - I got the same garbage. Another reason they give for spending $195
with them is to stop incoming emails from going astray.

Today I received a letter from Internet Registrations Australia extolling
the virtues of .biz and .info.

Let this be a lesson to AuDA planning further second levels domains within
.au on how NOT to proceed. Here are the reasons given for paying $195 to
pre-register.

1- Squatting on a name could earn you big dollars when you sell it in a few
years

2- Register every name remotely like your business name, personal name, etc
in every domain known to man in order to protect it from others 'cyber
squatting' and demanding money from you later.

3- Register businessname.com businessname.biz businessname.net
businessname.info businessname.com.au so that someone doesn't accidentally
hit the wrong web site or wrong email address.

If these are the only reasons for the creation of the new top level domains,
then what was the point exactly? I read the ICANN evaluations and I still
can't see the point.

Please, please AuDA I hope Australia can tread a rather more sensible line.
Are domain names anything but a vehicle for businesses to make money out of
selling... well... nothing?

Domain names are NOT a valuable natural resource. They are a way to allow
people to avoid having to type and remember IP addresses. Is that being
overly naive?
