companies could be guaranteed a "slot" on an equal basis, perhaps in
addition to a name elsewhere.

The right answer is: Use a search engine, use a list of companies in that
industry that might exist on the web or (as is the case with phone numbers),
receive that information from a business card or a phone call.

You're solving the problem with the wrong tool. I know that this doesn't
stop "most" people wanting their company to be companyname.com.au. But the
real impacts of having to take a second-best option are overblown in my
view. People already use .COM as an escape valve if they can't get what they
want, and has that made them impossible to find? No!
