GOVERNANCE

**********************

What can ICANN do? Human Rights and Internet Governance

Who governs the Internet? The answer might be surprising. Since 1998, key
parts of Internet governance have been administered by an organisation
called ICANN, under contract from the NTIA (part of the US Department of
Commerce). ICANN?s involvement comes under the remit of one of its
departments ? the IANA. IANA, amongst other things, hands out blocks of IP
addresses to countries and approves domain names ? both essential parts of
the Internet?s digital infrastructure.

During its meetings on 13 January and 1 February 2016, ICANN's Board
Governance Committee considered a Request for Reconsideration filed by
dotgay LLC. This request asked us to reconsider the outcome of a Community
Priority Evaluation, which resulted in dotgay LLC's .GAY application not
achieving community priority. Having carefully considered the Request for
Reconsideration, the BGC denied it at our face-to-face meeting on 1 February
2016.

I am pleased to announce the release of the sixth edition of AusRegistry?s
industry report, Behind the Dot: State of the .au Domain. Trust is an
integral aspect of the .au namespace. Our .au survey has consistently shown
that Australian Internet users are more likely to trust a website that ends
in .au and that they associate .au domain names with Australian entities.

Lessons to Be Learned from the Armada Collective's DDoS Attacks on Greek
Banks by Meg Bear

'It could've been worse' is a fascinating expression. It implies that the
incident in question obviously could have been worse than expected, however
it also implies that it could have been better, ultimately leading to the
conclusion that it was at least somewhat bad. So both fortunately and
unfortunately for three Greek banks, the ransom DDoS attacks levied against
them by hacker group the Armada Collective could have been worse.

Internet gripe sites and rants: Can anything be done?

Responding to defamatory online content, including negative and inaccurate
online reviews, tweets, Facebook or blog posts, can be very challenging.
Nevertheless, there are some tips and tools that can prove helpful in
removing defamatory content. ... Proactive tips to consider include
registering potential "gripe" domain name addresses, such as .sucks
registrations. Southwest Airlines has registered southwestsucks.com and then
provides contact information for lodging complaints at that address, which
may redirect some complaints in a more constructive way. You may also
benefit from hiring online reputation management firms.

It is selling products that look strikingly similar, too.

Using IPv6 with Linux? You?ve likely been visited by Shodan and other
scanners

One of the benefits of the next-generation Internet protocol known as IPv6
is the enhanced privacy it offers over its IPv4 predecessor. With a
staggering 2128 (or about 3.4?1038) theoretical addresses available, its IP
pool is immune to the types of systematic scans that criminal hackers and
researchers routinely perform to locate vulnerable devices and networks with
IPv4 addresses. What's more, IPv6 addresses can contain regularly changing,
partially randomized extensions. Together, the IPv6 features cloak devices
in a quasi anonymity that's not possible with IPv4.

Behind the Curtain: Making IPv6 Work by George Michaelson

Wouldn't it be nice if turning on IPv6 really was 'press one button and the
rest is magic' easy? For some things, it is. If you're talking about
client-side, enabling an IPv4-only home service on DSL or fibre really can
be this simple, because all the heavy lifting is being done inside your ISP:
you're not enabling IPv6 in the network, you're turning on the last mile. It
was knocking at your door and you just had to let it in.

au: Do business with Data61

We're creating the D61+ Partner Program (D61+), an innovation network
focused on data-driven disruption for Australia but with global context.
D61+ supports this network in the way we connect and manage our key
partnerships across academia, corporations, startups, federal and state
government agencies, investors and entrepreneurs.
